In Dublin, the acid-scarred, razor-slashed remains of a young woman is uncovered in the boot of the Swiss Ambassador's limousine. The Ambassador, his household and workers all become immediate suspects. Faced with the issue of diplomatic immunity, the policeman in charge of the case brings in John Norton, an ex-Inspector recognized for his brutal methods, to perform an "unoffical" investigation.
