In the 30s, a small village in the Provence is losing its residents because youngsters prefer to go to the city to find easy tasks as well as escape from being farmers residing in family member poverty. Only a few old individuals and the poacher Panturle remain. Panturle desire for bringing the village back to life, finding a partner, founding a household and also work as a farmer. Eventually, the village is gone to by a traveling knife-grinder, Urbain Gedemus and a girl, Arsule. Gedemus deals with Arsule like a slave, but Arsule accept this since she has nowhere to go and -we guess- her 'job' with Gedemus is the last thing that saves her from being a prostitute. When she fulfills Panturle and also knows about his desires, she gets away from Gedemus and also determines to stay with him.
